Chapter Four: Composting Basics
Okay, now that we have laid it all out for you, letâs get down to the nitty-gritty of actually making our own organic compost. The finished product we want is a dark, rich, crumbly material that smells earthy but sweet. You will be able to use it to condition the soil in your garden and feed your plants by using kitchen scraps, garden waste, and some of your paper waste as well.
Where?
The first thing you need to consider is where to make your compost heap. If you have a yard with just a bit of free open space, you can construct a compost area with some sticks and a large plastic cover to keep it warm and wet. You can also construct a compost bin or buy one â your choice. As we explained earlier, a composting bin speeds up the process because the environment is much more contained and controlled.
If youâre not the handy man type, there are some types of bins that are specifically designed for composting that are commercially available, or you can just improvise. Alternatively, if your area has a recycling program, you may be able to get a bin cheaply from the local waste management organization.
Choosing a compost bin is easy. You just need to make sure that it is neither too large nor too small for your needs (if you have a large garden or yard you may want to go for a bigger bin). It should be easy to access, no gaps on the sides. You can use cardboard or sawdust to insulate it. It should also have a cover and a sort of platform so that the materials will not settle on the bottom and keep the air from circulating.
Place the bin or compost pile in a sunny area convenient to a water source. If you are dispensing with the bin, place it directly on the soil to let excess water drain.
